Some hormone-like properties of Allium Cepa L. (onion)

Onion juice fed to rats produced a testosterone-like effect as it increased the seminal weight in castrated and non-castrated animals, an insulin-like action as it reduced blood sugar level in animals made hyperglycemic experimentally, and a growth hormone-like activity as it increased the growth rate in young rats. It, moreover, possessed an oxytocic action when tested, in vitro, on the rat uterus at various stages of sex cycle.
