Experimental evidence of parasitic effects in the shear test on sandwich beams

Abstract

The present work is an experimental investigation of the standard shear test ASTM C273 carried out on sandwich structures. The goal is to highlight and to quantify some parasitic effects that occur during this test. A suitable optical method providing whole-field measurements has been used to capture the displacement and strain fields during the test. Some parasitic effects have been detected: the steel plates bend during the test, the shear strain reaches zero near the free edges and compressive/tensile strains occur in this zone.
