Conclusions

  1. 1.

The effect of a traveling seismic wave on stresses and strains in earth dams depends both on the geometry of the profile, size and material of the structure, and the deformative properties of the foundation; it is recommended to take the effect into afccount in cases when the seismic-wave velocity along the base of the dam is greater than or equal to the half-period of its vibration with respect to the fundamental tone.

  2. 2.

Consideration of the effect of the traveling seismic wave in calculatiions leads to a redistribution of calculted dynamic stresses in the dam (asymmetry of dynamic stresses over the profile), with their relatively small change in absolute value, to a decrease in the maximum displacements of the creast, and to an increase in the difference of times (phase difference) of occurrence of the maximum dynamic stress components for different elements of the dam profile.

  3. 3.

The conclusions presented were obtained during an investigation of the effect of a traveling seismic wave on the assumptioin of elastic behavior of the structure. Consideration of the nonlinear behavior of the soils under an intense seismic load requires additional investigations.
