Use of organic coatings for protecting metal structures of river hydro developments against corrosion and fouling

Conclusions

The results of full-scale investigations of VNIIG permit considering the following paint compositions to be the most effective for protection against corrosion and mussel fouling:

  1. a)

    The first eight coatings in Table 1 for protection simultaneously against corrosion and fouling (the antifouling properties last 3–4 years and do not have traces of corrosion during 4-year tests).

  2. b)

    Coatings 1–4 of Tables 2 and 3 and the use of one coat of primar VL-02 and three coasts of paint KhV-74 for protection against corrosion (no changes in the conditions were noted during 4–5 year tests).

Antifouling paints (with the exception of KF-751) can be applied on any anticorrosion coating of an ethynol, vinyl, and epoxy type (ÉKZhS-40, KhS-720, KhV-74, ÉP-72, ÉP-755, KhS-010, etc.), excluding the zinc-protector primer. It is not recommended to apply paint KF-751 directly on the anticorrosion coating. It is applied on a antifouling coating on a base of paints KhV-71, KhS-79, and KhV-53 in order to extend their service life. The application of the antifouling paints is done according to [5]. The application of anticorrosion coatings recommended along with antifouling paints and also directly for protection against corrosion is done according to [6].

The cheapest of the recommended anticorrosion coatings are KhS-720 and KhV-74, and the technology of their application is also simpler. At electric power stations where equipment is subjected to fouling by mussels, it is more expedient to use combined protection-anticorrosion coatings together with antifouling paints.
