Abstract
A technique has been developed for the growth of single crystals of lanthanum tetraboride LaB4, from solution in La. Under optimum conditions, crystal size is limited by the size of the crucible. Lattice parameters, thermal expansion coefficient, and microhardness are reported and the growth facets have been identified. An initial check on the electron emitting properties have shown them to be comparable with those of LaB6.
