Abstract

Recent advances in the use of gas cells using resonance fluorescence detection methods have achieved sensitivities sufficient for the study of isotopes off the line of nuclear stability. The development and application of the gas cell technique to the light Yb isotopes is described, and some properties of atoms and ions in buffer gases are discussed.
