Structural site occupation of iron within 2∶1 dioctahedral phyllosilicates studied by57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy

A Mössbauer spectroscopic study of a range of Fe-containing 2∶1 dioctahedral phyllosilicates has indicated that Fe substitution shows a consistent pattern. Samples with a lowerIVFe3+ content directVIFe3+ substitution to essentially trans-OH sites; intermediateIVFe3+ content samples directVIFe3+ substitution to both cis-and trans-OH sites; highIVFe3+ content directsVIFe3+ to cis-OH sites only.
