Hydrotechnical Construction Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

An experimental dam, 7.5 m high, made of graded rock, was sluiced-in with sand in a hydromechanical installation developed at the B. E. Vedeneev VNIIG. This proved the method to be feasible.

  2. 2.

The employed method of sluicing-in rock fills with sand in layers from the base to the crest can be recommended for use under production conditions.

  3. 3.

Seepage investigations of the dam with a head up to 6.7 m showed its high imperviousness and seepage stability for an average seepage gradient of 0.415.

  4. 4.

The rock-sand medium resulting from a complete sluicing-in of the fill with sand and with a density of the sand filler not lower than 1.6 g cm3 is not subject to piping and can serve to form a body of a dam.

  5. 5.

Results obtained in the course of the investigations described in the article permit to consider rock-sand dams capable of competing with rock-fill dams of the classical type (with a core and cutoff wall) of equivalent profiles.
