Conclusions

The hydraulic fill method in which settling deformations of the sluiced-in material occur during construction with simultaneous wetting of the foundation is the most promising technology for erecting structures of loess material.

Compaction of the sluiced-in loess material can be divided into three stages each with a different physical basis, namely: a)settling compaction, b)percolation compaction, and c)compaction by drying.

Utilization of natural drying in the consolidation of sluiced-in loess material is effective under arid climate conditions. The material must be placed in about 30-cm layers with shifting of the delivery into adjoing compartments during the drying of each layer.

In delivering the slurry it is advisable to use perforated conduits; this ensures favorable distribution of the material and aids in increasing the stability of the structure.

5.
The rate of placement of loess material must be computed with the recommended formula, taking into account percolation properties of the material and the temperature regime and the moisture deficit of the construction region.

From the Editors. The paper deals with the technological peculiarities of layer-by-layer sluicingin of loess-type materials and establishes the regularities of their consolidation by natural drying. Of greatest interest are the experimental data of investigations and the theoretical conclusions. The method of sluicing from perforated pipes placed on trestles proposed by the author is suitable only for small structures because mechanization in placing the material and moving the pipes is excluded and additional labor is required for cleaning the openings in the pipes.
