Abstract

A naturally regenerating stand of European beech in the Southern Black Forest was fertilized with MgSO4 in order to reduce extreme Mg deficiency diagnosed by symptom, soil, and leaf analyses. Nine weeks later, the Mg content in leaves of fertilized trees was increased by 300% compared with the control plot. Phosphorus and K contents were decreased after fertilization, but did not fall below deficiency levels. An appreciable amount of fertilizer sulfate was taken up, slightly increasing the organic S fraction in leaves. Shoot growth was stimulated within the first vegetation period after treatment. A dose of 500 kg ha−1 MgSO4 was sufficient to achieve these effects.
