Summary
The outer wall of Schlemm's canal and its outflow channels were studied by electron microscopy in 10 normal human eyes of all age groups (8 to 58 years), enucleated because of a tumor in the maxillary sinus as well as in a comparison group of 10 primate eyes (Cercopithecus aethiops, Macaca mulatta). The outer wall showed a specific structure, consisting of 8–10 parallel layers of fibrocytes and fibroblasts, among which deposits of dense osmiophilic homogeneous substances and mucoproteids were seen. Free cells such as macrophages, mast cells etc. were found between the fibrocytic layers of the outer wall. With age the number of fibrocyts decreases whereas the deposits of homogeneous substances increase in size and density.
Where the outflow channels originate one often find torus-like ridges and septa which reveal the same structure as that of the outer wall. The structural pattern of the outer wall follows the outflow channels within the first third if its scleral course.
Parallel to Schlemm's canal an undivided arteriolar vessel follows the canal for a certain length. The function of these vessels may be to reduce the intraarterial pressure before the entrance into the intrascleral plexus to a degree suitable for the normal aqueous outflow. There may be also a regulatory mechanism.
