Summary

Examination of the pigment epithelium of older men reveals various changes within the cell which should be regarded as degenerative. The morphologic changes consist of:

  1. 1.

    different-sized vesciles or vacuoles, which occur in groups or throughout the cytoplasm of the cell;

  2. 2.

    phagosomes, phagocytized parts of the outer segments;

  3. 3.

    giant membrane structures which sometimes show a continuous transition into the lateral cell membrane;

  4. 4.

    conglomerations of the long lamellae of ergastoplasm covering a huge area of the cell, and

  5. 5.

    round, homogeneous electron-dense bodies resembling the lipoid bodies in the normal pigmented epithelial cell of the rabbit.
