Summary
The pupillomotor response to light flashes of the human eye was measured continuously by reflecting infrared light from the iris onto a photocell. A comparison was made between the pupillary and sensory threshold in relation to the area stimulated, duration and localisation of the stimulus at different levels of adaptation.
Above a field size of 30° the luminance difference between pupillary and visual thresholds is small (about two times) and nearly constant. With smaller stimuli the threshold of the pupillomotor response increases much more than the sensory threshold. With stimulation of the central retina the change of threshold of the pupillomotor response at different field sizes is about the same as with peripheral stimulation. However, the changes of threshold of the visual response is bigger with central than with peripheral stimulation.
Similar to the sensory visual response the light threshold of the pupillomotor response depends on the duration of the light stimulus. With stimulation of large fields the light threshold of the pupillomotor response during dark adaptation decreases about proportionally to the increase of the duration up to 0,04 sec and with small fields up to 0,4 sec. During light adaptation the decrease of threshold of the pupillomotor response with increasing duration of the light stimulus is less than during dark adaptation.
