Abstract

In a captive group of geladas three cases of infanticide have been observed after replacement of the harem-leader. Two of the infants were born before the replacement, the third one 12 weeks afterwards. The possible function of infanticide is discussed. Female counterstrategies other than avoiding contact with the male were not observed.
