Hydrotechnical Construction Aims and scope

Conclusions

The experience with the first years of operation of the Bratsk hydroelectric plant indicates that its hydraulic structures are in good condition. In order to ensure a reliable long-term operation of the structures and to improve the supervision conditions it is necessary to carry out certain major measures, which are beyond the scope of the routine operation maintenance. These measures are determined by the local operation characteristics of certain portions of the structures, which are partially related to changes introduced in the project during construction. Some of the work being carried out at the present time, such as the application of consolidation grouting in the foundations of the first pillars of the concrere dam, is the result of deficient designs resulting from inadequacy of our concepts about the combined action of the dam and the contact zone of the diabase rock foundation. Further observations will reveal how effective are the measures adopted during operation. The data presented in this article of the experience with the first years of operation of the hydraulic structures of the Bratsk hydroelectric plant should be taken into account in the design of similar structures.
