The method here proposed by the authors permits determining the stress state of the arch and of the supporting walls prevailing before excavation of the lower portion of an underground powerhouse but does not take into account the effect of the entire excavation upon the stress-strain state of the arch and of the supporting wall. Theoretical and experimental investigations have shown that as a result of variations in the stress state of a rock mass around an excavation, there are elastic deformations of the wall on the internal face of the excavation which exert a marked effect upon the stress state of the arch and of the supporting walls already built. Thus, the complementary stresses caused by this phenomenon should be added to the stresses obtained by the method here proposed.
