Parasitization of 6 lepidopteran cotton pests byChelonus blackburni [Hym.: Braconidae]

Abstract

When eggs of 6 species of lepidopteran cotton pests were offered toChelonus blackburni Cameron, all were parasitized except those of the saltmarsh caterpillar,Estigmene acrea (Drury). However, the parasite did not distinguish between parasitized and unparasitized eggs, so superparasitization was common. Of the 5 accepted species (pink bollworm,Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders), cotton bollworm,Heliothis zea (Boddie), tobacco budworm,Heliothis virescens (F.), cabbage looper,Trichoplusia ni (Hübner), and beet armyworm,Spodoptera exigua (Hübner), pink bollworms and cotton bollworms were the most suitable hosts. When all 5 species were offered, the order of preference was as follows: pink bollworms = cabbage loopers > cotton bollworms > tobacco budworms > beet armyworms. In paired preference tests the parasite consistently preferred pink bollworms.

Résumé

Quand les œufs de six espèces de lepidoptères du coton sont offerts àChelonus blackburni (Cameron), tous sont parasités excepté ceux de la chenille du marais salantEstigmene acrea (Drury). Cependant, le parasite ne distingue pas entie les œufs parasitisés et non parasitisés; de ce fait le superparasitisme est très fréquent. Des cinq espèces acceptées [le ver rose de la capsule du coton,Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders), la noctuelle du coton,Heliothis zea (Boddie), la noctuelle du tabac,Heliothis virescens (F.), la noctuelle du chou,Trichoplusia ni (Hübner) et la noctuelle de la betterave,Spodoptera exigua (Hübner)], les deux premières espèces sont les hôtes préférentiels. Quand les cinq espèces sont offertes simultanément, l'ordre de préférence est le suivant: le ver rose de la capsule du coton = la noctuelle du chou > la noctuelle du coton > la noctuelle du tabac > la noctuelle de la betterave. Quand les espèces sont testées par paires, le parasite préfère nettement le ver rose de la capsule du coton.
