Conclusions

The results of preliminary investigations of a deep radial water-operated gate and design computation permit the author to make the following propositions:

  1. 1.

The gate can be used for automatically maintaining a constant level in the upstream pool and also in regulating excess discharges.

  2. 2.

Design computations show that the variant with a radial gate results in a considerable reduction in the cost of the gate unit (according to calculations made by the author the savings amounted to about 70%) because it does not contain expensive, high lifting capacity mechanisms and also because the amount of rock and reinforced concrete work is reduced.

  3. 3.

The control mechanisms of the gate is simple and sufficiently maneuverable.

  4. 4.

The hydraulic design of the gate and the control devices presents no difficulty and can be accomplished by the above-presented method.

  5. 5.

The speed of movement of the gate depends on the dimensions of the pressure chamber, the variable crosssection slot, and the discharge pipe. The total lifting and lowering time of the gate under operating conditions ranges from 3 to 20 min.

  6. 6.

The gate can be stopped firmly in any intermediate position, i. e., it can operate with partial openings. With high heads such an operation of the gate may be limited by cavitaticn and vibration conditions.

  7. 7.

The sizes of the variable slot and of the discharge pipe are relatively small; they constitute not more than 0,4% and 0.8% respectively, of the cross section of the discharge conduit.

  8. 8.

Analyses show that the lifting forces are not limited, therefore the gate can close openings of much larger sizes than gates with mechanical drives, and reinforced concrete can in a number of cases be used as the material of the support structure.

The deep radial gate has a number of substantial advantages. However, in order to introduce it in production it will be necessary to carry out more detailed investigations and designs.
