From the editors These two articles by A. N. Romashov, V. V. Garnov, Ya. F. Sokolov, and G. I. Shapovalov deal with the use of directed blasting in hydraulic engineering. The first article deals with the mathematical analysis, the principle of action of large explosions, and the formation of a rock pile (the Medeo dam); the second article is devoted to the actual work and design characteristics of the protective dam at Medeo, erected by directed blasting. The figures and data (which are the same for both articles) are inserted in keeping with the order of the articles and the text.
