Abstract
Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) has diverse actions other than causing hypercalcemia. Evidences are accumulating to suggest the roles of PTHrP in the central nervous system (CNS). We measured PTHrP concentration in human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which was higher than that in plasma. PTHrP in CSF was bioactive in stimulating cAMP production in cultured osteoblastic cells. Our deta, together with previous report that area and cell-specific mRNA expression of PTHrP and PTH/PTHrP receptor, suggest fundamental roles of PTHrP in CNS.
