Effect of temperature and humidity on the development ofPhytoseiulus Persimilis and its ability to regulate populations ofTetranychus urticae [Acarina: Phytoseiidae. Tetranychidae]

Abstract

The development ofPhytoseiulus persimilisAthias-Henriot and the effectiveness of it as a predator ofTetranychus urticae (Koch) were studied at constant temperatures of 15°, 18°, 21°, 24° and 27°C (humidity fluctuations from 60% to 90% R.H.) and at constant humidities of 40% and 80% R.H. at the temperatures 21° and 27°. Optimal temperature for time of development was 27° (at 60%–85% R.H.). A high reduction in egg vitality was recorded at 40% R. H. and 27% At 21° the egg vitality was only slightly lower at 40% R.H. than at 80% R.H. The predator gave control ofT. urticae at temperatures from 15° to 27° (humidity fluctuation from 60%–90% R.H.), and the most rapid and efficient control was obtained at 27° (60%–85% R.H.). The predator did not give sufficient control ofT. urticae at 27° and 40% R.H. At 21° control ofT. urticae was obtained at both 40% and 80% R.H., but the prey population was reduced faster at 80% R.H. than at 40% R.H.

Le développement dePhytoseiulus persimilisAthias-Henriot et son efficacité comme prédateur deTetranychus urticae (Koch) ont été étudiés aux températures de 15°, 18°, 21°, 24° et 27°C (avec des fluctuations d’humidité de 60% à 90% H.R.) et à des humidités constantes de 40% et 80% H.R. à la température de 21° et 27°C. La température optimale pour la durée de développement était 27° (à 60%–85% H.R.). Une grande réduction de la vitalité des œufs a été constatée à 40% H.R. et à 27°. A 21° la vitalité des œufs n’était que légèrement inférieure à 40% qu’à 80% H.R. Le prédateur a contrôléT. urticae de 15° à 27°, l’action la plus rapide et efficace étant obtenue à 27° (60%–85% H.R.). Le prédateur n’a pas donné de résultats suffisants contreT. urticae à 27° et 40% H.R. par rapport à 80% H.R. A 21° on a obtenu le contrôle deT. urticae aussi bien à 40% qu’à 80% H.R., mais la population de proies était diminuée plus vite à 80% qu’à 40% H.R.
