Summary
Experimental investigations onPimpla instigator show that females of this parasitic Hymenopteron are able accurately to select a site for the placement of their eggs in the body of Lepidopterous pupae (Pieris brassicae). For this purpose, the female takes its bearings in relation to the extremities of the pupa. Thus the female inserts its ovipositor in the second and third thoracic segments of the pupa. I have demonstrated that physiological defense reactions (cellular immunity) against eggs ofPimpla are weaker in this part of the host body than in others.
