Abstract

The Italian strain of the halticine,Longitarsus jacobaeae (Waterhouse), already successfully used in controlling ragwort,Senecio jacobaea L., in northern California, was considered ill-adapted to the climatic areas in Australia where ragwort infestations occur. A strain ofL. jacobaeae was found at Annonay, Central France where the climate is more appropriate. This strain was teste against a restricted group of composites,Acacia spp. andEucalyptus spp. to confirm its safety for introduction into Australia.
