Use of the parasiteEncarsia formosa [Hym.: Aphelinidae] as a part of pestmanagement on cucumbers

Experiments using the parasiteEncarsia formosa Gahan to controlTrialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) on commercially grown cucumbers are described.

Encarsia formosa was introduced by the dribble method or at different rates whenT. vaporariorium infestation was detected. It is concluded that an initial number of 10–30 adultT. vaporariorum per 100 plants require 3 parasite introductions at a rate of 5 parasites per plant, while less than 1 adultT. vaporariorum per 100 plants requires a rate of 3 parasites per plant in each introduction.

The use ofE. formosa could not be integrated with diazinon or lindane drenches againstThrips tabaci Lindem., but was successfully integrated with triforine spray against mildew infestations.

Encarsia formosa a été introduit suivant 2 techniques: la «dribble method» ou des apports en quantité variable lorsque l'infestation des plants parT. vaporariorum est décelée. On a pu montrer qu'une infestation initiale de 10 à 30 adultes deT. vaporariorum pour 100 plants nécessitait 3 introductions du parasite à raison de 5 parasites par plante alors qu'une infestation inférieure, de l'ordre de 1 adulte d'aleurode pour 100 plants n'était justifiable que de 3 parasites par plante à chaque introduction.

L'emploi d'E. formosa n'a pas pu être associé avec les traitements au diazinon ou au lindane utilisés contreThrips tabaci Lindem., mais il a été associé avec succès à l'emploi de la triforine contre l'oïdium.
