Summary
In western France, populations ofA. fabae onVicia faba have been regularly destroyed every year since 1960 byE. aphidis andE. fresenii. This also occurred in 1967, onC. horni on artichokes, due toE. planchoniana andE. aphidis. In the Rhône Valley in 1968, the same fungi attackedM. persicae on peach-trees.
In Brittany, entomophthoroses persist during the whole year, (enzootic phase) due to anholocyclic aphids and climatic factors, of which the relative humidity stays above 90% for more than 8 hours per day, all the year round (fig. 1, tab. 1). This is not the case in the Rhône Valley.
The outbreak of epizootics depends on both climatic factors (fig. 2–5) and on the aphid population. Where usually occurs high R.H. epizootics initiate after an extended period of more than two days of diurnal, moderate precipitations lasting about 5 hours per day and followed by an increase of maximum temperatures above 20°C. In other regions, this will happen when those conditions are preceded by many rainy days with a R.H. above 90% during more than 10 hours per day. Such epizootics are not considered to depend upon host-density but rather on inoculum density and distribution in the culture.
The results suggest a possibility of aphid control by appropriate irrigation programmes.
