Summary
By surface spray on artificial food medium the comparative activity of three nuclear polyedrosis viruses, using formulations prepared in an identical way, has been studied on newly hatched larvae of four noctuid species.
All three viruses are active on the studied species, but at a different degree. In order to appreciate quantitatively the established cross activities, eighteen “indices of specificity differences” are calculated. These vary between 1,5 and 1 000.
The polyeder inclusion bodies ofAutographa californica are most active onSpodoptera exigua andTrichoplusia ni, whereas the polyeder inclusion bodies of bothMamestra brassicae andScotia segetum are most active on their original host.
The authors emphasize the importance in microbial control of quantitative approaches when studying host ranges in insect viruses.
