Summary
The response of the biotypes from Thuringian origins was compared with a suitable test assortment in field and pot culture experiments. It is found that hybrids with theSol. andigenum parent 3/13 (probably C.P.C. 1685) were considerably less infected than hybrids with theSol. andigenum parent 3/14 (probably C.P.C. 1673). It was found possible to confirm these results in pot culture experiments with cysts of known origin. At the same time it was shown that differences in infestation between the two groups ofSol. andigenum descendants are only of a gradual kind and that there are still no grounds for a further subdivision of the B-biotype of the eelworms studied.
In other experiments a comparative study was made of the capability as hosts of threeSol. nigrum descendants and twoSol. andigenum hybrids with cysts of known origin. Descendant No. 191 ofSol. nigrum behaved in the same way as theSol. andigenum hybrids. TheSol. nigrum descendant No. 2a was attacked by all eelworm populations known to date, whereas No. 2b remained uninfected. The eelworm populations hitherto studied by us consist of the A and B types.
