Summary
Twelve German varieties of potato were grown at an altitude of 1900 m in Ceylon under normal daylength (ca. 12 hr.) and under a daylength artificially increased to 18 hr. The mean daily temperature maxima and minima were 25–28 C and 12 C respectively (Table 1).
As is shown inTable 2, the increased daylength induced a marked long-day response in all varieties: haulm growth was stimulated, the growing period lengthened and both tuber number and weight increased. The late varieties responded more strongly to the increased daylength than did the second-early varieties.
