Summary
Systemic and non-systemic fungicides, applied to tubers after harvest as dust and dips, were screened for their effectiveness in controlling gangrene (caused byPhoma exigua var.foveata) in storage, and their ability to improve the health of progeny tubers. Thiabendazole, benomyl and fuberidazole were the most effective of the chemicals tested. In storage all three controlled gangrene as effectively as an 0.15% a.i. organo-mercurial dip treatment, and in progeny tubers they reduced the incidence of silver scurf and, on occasion, gangrene.
Dusts of benomyl, thiabendazole, fuberidazole, thiram and captafol, at concentrations of active ingredient sub-optimal for the control of gangrene, were combined in pairs and applied to tubers immediately after harvest. Some composite dusts were no more effective than either constituent applied alone but others, notably 1% a.i. benomyl+1% a.i. captafol combined synergistically to give enchanced control in storage. However disease control in progeny tubers was not improved by combining fungicides.
