Summary
The following characteristics of 14 potato clones (including the cultivars Ora and Schwalbe) were studied over the period 1975 to 1979 (meteorological data in Fig. 1): potential photosynthetic rate (14CO2 fixation of leaf discs from the middle leaf fraction for 4 years), leaf area index for 2 years, and tuber dry (TM) and fresh matter yields (FM) for 5 years. On account of the strong relationship between yield and the duration of the vegetative phase (Table 1, Fig. 2) maximum bulking rates (increases in fresh and dry matter during the period of linear growth, Fig. 2) were determined by experimental liftings from 1977–1979.
The genotypic yield relations were less strongly marked in the dry years, but those of genotypic photosynthetic rate were least marked in years of low radiation levels (Table 2).
The relationship between genotypic photosynthetic rates and yielding ability is discussed largely in terms of their correlation with time-independent bulking rates. The significant correlation coefficients between photosynthetic rates and bulking rates were: for the combined forms, r=+0.71 (FM) and r=+0.69 (TM); for the early main crop clones, r=+0.89 (TM). It is hypothesised that the yield performance of later types are determined primarily by their photosynthetic rates since their haulm development as a rule already ensures optimum light interception. The performance of earlier types on the other hand is primarily determined by the rate of haulm development. It can be inferred from Fig. 4 that the early often do not reach the optimum leaf area index.
Photosynthetic rate and leaf area index occur in different combinations in the clones. The strongest performing type ‘Ora’ was distinguished by its high optimum index and a very high photosynthetic rate.
The results show that a high potential photosynthetic rate is an important physiological determinant of yield which should be sought in breeding programmes. Moreover it is confirmed that a sufficiently large leaf area is necessary for high yields.
