Summary
Mature tubers covered by a persistent film of water, of average thickness about 3 × 10−2 mm, were found to be anaerobic after about 6 12 hours at 10°C or 2 12 hours at 21°C. This may be of importance in considering the effect of a film of water on bacterial rotting or break of dormancy. Tubers partly immersed in water did not become anaerobic although the oxygen tension, determined in the centre of the immersed part, was reduced to an extent related to the area of periderm covered by water.
