Alan Riach is a poet and Senior Lecturer in English at the University of Waikato, New Zealand, where he specializes in twentieth-century literature. Born in Scotland in 1957, he holds degrees from the universities of Cambridge and Glasgow. He is the General Editor of theCollected Works of Hugh MacDiarmid, including theSelected Poems (New Directions, U.S.A., 1993; Penguin, U.K., 1994) and the author of the critical studyHugh MacDiarmid's Epic Poetry (Edinburgh University Press, 1991). His own poetry is published by Auckland University Press inThis Folding Map (1990) andFirst and Last Songs (1995).
