Short-circuited galvanic cells which can emerge in corrosion-mechanical cracks

Materials Science Aims and scope

Abstract

We consider the distinct features of the functioning of galvanic cells which cause the evolution of corrosion cracks under stress. We determine the electrochemical characteristics of a cell formed due to differential hydrogenation and their dependence on the ratio of areas of the anode and cathode for a number of structural materials. On the basis of the data obtained, we propose an interpretation of the mechanism of evolution of corrosion and mechanical cracks.
