Summary

A petroleum ether-in-water emulsion stabilized by sodium lauryl sulphate, an anionic surfactant was studied and its stability has been examined in the light of D. L. V. O. theory by adding some cationic detergents with different carbon chain lengths and head groups size. Flocculation studies were made haemocytometrically and the values were correlated with zeta potentials which were determined microelectro phoretically. From the values of zeta-potential, the energy curves, binding parameters, charge densities, operating value of Hamaker constant for the system etc. have been calculated. Both the rates of coalescence and flocculation were measured separately in order to study the kinetics of coagulation of the system.
