Summary
Within a cross-sectional study on a group of 215 orthodontically treated children, consisting of patients with class III malocclusions, class II,1 malocclusions, and a control group, the degree of relative skeletal maturity of these patients was estimated by the use of various radiographic methods. In both male and female patients, a statistically significant trend could be shown indicating an accelerated level of skeletal maturity in patients with class III malocclusions as opposed to patients with class II,1 malocclusions. This fact can be interpreted as a clue to a possible influence of the so-called dynamic growth synchronization on the development of class III and class II,1 malocclusions and an aetiological complementarity of these two malocclusion types.
