The development of the hypophysial vascular system in the rabbit, with particular regard to the primary plexus and portal vessels

Summary

The development of the hypophysial vascular system in the rabbit is described. — The first internal vessels of the pars distalis have been observed in 16 day-old embryos. A well-developed internal vascular system of the lobi laterales and of the pars distalis is established in foetures 18 days old. The pars intermedia has single internal vessels in foetuses 23 days old, and at 27 days part of the intermedia can be quite well vascularized.

A structurally differentiated superficial primary plexus on the eminentia mediana is established in foetuses 19 days old. The first internal vessels of the eminentia arise in close connection with the capillaries of the tuber. This process starts in foetuses 21 days old. One day later real internal vessels of the eminentia have been observed.

Portal vessels are first formed in foetuses 21 days old. They pass from the caudal part of the primary plexus, go rostral to the pars intermedia, and end in the pars distalis caudal toAtwell's recess. Long portal vessels from the rostral parts of the eminentia to the pars distalis can first be seen in foetuses 23 days old.
