Bonding strain gages in small openings

A simple technique has been developed for bonding strain gages in narrow openings whose dimensions are too limiting for normal procedures

Abstract

Narrow openings have often complicated the bonding of strain gages because of the physical restrictions of the working area. A simple method has been devised to overcome this limitation by using a mock-up of the surface to which the gages will be bonded. The gages are bonded to the mock-up and then transferred to the surface of the member to be stressed. The technique was developed for use inisde pipes; however, it is directly applicable to many types of irregular configurations with limited access.
