Abstract
Theories describing postbuckling and postyielding of circular plates under uniform edge compression have been published by several authors in recent years. There is, however, no experimental verification available for any of these theoretical approaches. The present paper reviews the theoretical work dealing with the title problem and describes some experiments on circular plates under uniform edge compression. The experimental results are compared with the predictions of the applicable theories. The importance of material strain hardening and the phenomenon of ‘jamming’ of plastic hinges is discussed.
