On a type of photoelastic mottle in an epoxy resin

A method which has reduced undesirable, permanent birefringence in castings of a resin used for three-dimensional photoelasticity is discussed in this technical note

Summary

Prolonged stirring of Araldite 6020 and phthalic anhydride before casting has resulted in considerable reduction of mottle and minor improvements in clarity and figure of merit. Some care is required to avoid premature gelation and the inclusion of air bubbles and foreign particles.
