An interpretation of photoviscoelastic/plastic data

The birefringence of viscoelastic and viscoplastic polymeric materials is analyzed in terms of a phenomenological theory of birefringence

Abstract

The birefringent effect of viscoelastic and viscoplastic polymeric materials is considered and shown to have separate contributions from the stress, recoverable strain and the permanent deformations. Experimental data for a number of materials are discussed and the procedure for analyzing these data described.
