Application of the strain-phase-shift method for the determination of damping in metals

Abstract

The method and experimental procedure for measuring metals' damping capacity (an inelasticity characteristic) through the phase difference between axial and transverse strains (strain-phase-shift method) is presented. The effect of each measuring system element on the phase shift is estimated, and procedures of its elimination or consideration are proposed. The features of the method are illustrated by the example of measuring the damping capacity of carbon steel 20 and Mn−Cu alloy specimens subjected to static tensile stresses. The data are correlated with the corresponding damping characteristics of the same metals obtained by the free damped oscillations method.
