Summary
Evapotranspiration of a grass surface, about 100×100 m in size, near Kloten Aeroport (Switzerland) was calculated by means of the formulae ofPenman andThornthwaite. The results were compared with actual observations. It was found that, under the local climatic conditions, neither of the formulae leads to correct results. An empirical formula has been developed which expresses evaporation as a function of parameters available from the routine observations of the meteorological station network. This formula has been tested in a wide range of climatic and topographic conditions. Its adaptation to the grass surface at Kloten renders better agreement with the observations than the formulae ofPenman andThornthwaite. The practical advantages of our method, with special regard to agricultural problems in Switzerland, are discussed.
