Summary
Nine diesters differing by the number, n, of methylene groups placed between the two chemical functions were synthetized and used as stationary phases in gas-liquid chromatography. The alternation of their chromatographic properties with the “evenness” of n is analysed by means of partial molar excess quantities. The alternation mechanism differs according to the test-solute (n-octane, 1-butanol, pyridine). The behaviour of pyridine shows a predominance of the cohesion effect and the existence of a different residual order in the liquid depending on the evenness of n. For bifunctional compounds, this residual order, maintained above the melting point in a large temperature domain depends on association possibilities with these molecules. Some families of monofunctional compounds were also tested but did not present the alternation phenomenon. This is in accordance with the lack of possibilities for association of these monofunctional compounds.
