Steric effects in liquid-solid chromatographic analysis of pyridine and its 2-alkylsubstituted derivatives

Summary

Liquid-solid chromatography of pyridine and its 2-alkyl derivatives on alumina, silica gel or alumina impregnated by cobalt chloride is described. It is demonstrated that steric accesibility rather than basicity of the nitrogen heterocyclic compounds is the factor determining the elution order. A correlation between the logarithm of the retention times of alkylpyridines and the steric constants of Taft, Hancock or Palm has been established.
