Summary
In lightly anesthetized dogs immobilized with succinyl choline, supraspinal central nervous influences on systemic circulation were excluded by high spinal cord transection and vagotomy. Circulatory responses to selective spinal cord cooling and to general hypothermia (TR≧30°C) were observed.
Selective cooling of the spinal cord suppressed vasomotor activity as indicated by a fall of arterial blood pressure and of heart rate.
In some cases blood pressure returned, after an initial fall, more or less completely to its precooling level during spinal cord cooling. This tendency became more significant with time.
During general hypothermia, blood pressure fell with rectal temperature. This, however, was only partly due to a depressing effect of low spinal cord temperature on vasomotor activity, since only in a few cases selective spinal cord heating increased arterial blood pressure in the hypothermic animal.
It is concluded that spinal cord hypothermia primarily has a depressing influence on spinal vasomotor efferents. A spinal mechanism, the efficiency of which rises with time, may increase vasomotor activity during spinal cord cooling. However, the previously described strong pressor responses following spinal cord cooling in animals with interrupted proprioceptive circulatory control seem to require a supraspinal mechanism.
