Summary
For ten years, apart from the conventional observations by coastal stations, vessels and aircraft, television pictures from weather satellites have been available to an increasing extent for ice reconnaissance. The great advantage of satellite pictures is that they comprise the synchronous appearance of the ice conditions of entire ocean regions which, however, due to the great orbiting altitude of the satellites, is considerably generalized. Therefore, the question arises concerning the informative value of satellite pictures.
As an answer to this question, a “gauging” of the contents of the picture with reference to well known natural conditions seems to be most useful. This is carried out by means of two pictures taken by the weather satellite ESSA 8 in spring 1969 for the Baltic Sea which, on account of a close grid of observations, is most suitable.
It appears that the different grey tones and textures on the satellite pictures essentially represent the manifold forms of ice cover in accordance with the Baltic Ice Code. This, above all, is applicable to the different stages of development of sea ice as well as to the degree of ice concentration. As a result, a key for the interpretation of ice cover of the Baltic Sea on satellite pictures is submitted.
Finally, the course of the ice winter 1968/69 in the Northern Baltic is represented by means of nine further ESSA 8 pictures. Especially, the possibility of concluding from the picture of the ice distribution to the development of ice conditions and the morphological ice surface features are taken into consideration.
