The Fibonacci sequence of numbers is 1, 1 , 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89 … The series is created by adding the first number, 1, to the second; the second to the third; the third to the fourth; and so on ad infinitum. The numbers, and even more the relationships between them, have excited the wonder of mathematicians, scientists, and artists. The ratio of one number in the series to another, when it is divided by the following one, is approximately 0.618, and gets even closer to it as numbers get larger. The relationship between two sides of a rectangle known as the golden rectangle is the golden ratio of 0.618/1 or 1/0.618 and can be stated as a/b= b/a + b. The spiral forms of animal horns, shells, and many plants follow the pattern of a logarithmic spiral that is drawn according to the growth sequence of the Fibonacci series.
