Conclusions

  1. 1.

A relation was obtained which permits determining the coefficient of friction of cohesionless soils on watertight polymer film facings of earth structures at preliminary design stages.

  2. 2.

At present it is recommended to determine the coefficient of friction of soil on film experimentally on single-shear type instruments. The use of the existing instruments with a tiltable platform for these purposes requires additional substantiation owing to the possibility of errors.

  3. 3.

A further experimental study of this problem is needed for obtaining sufficiently reliable shear characteristics.
