Summary
Proceeding from simple theoretical considerations formulae representing the intensity distribution of the monochromatic downward and upward component of submarine light in deep and shallow sea areas are derived.
In shallow seas the downward component of submarine illumination always diminishes with depth whereas in the upward component a minimum of intensity may be caused by the reflection from the sea bottom. Its distance from the bottom depends only on the bottom's albedo, the diffuse reflection of the water, and the extinction coefficient, but not on the depth. If the diffuse reflection of the water is known, the albedo of the bottom can be computed from the optical distance of the minimum from the bottom and vice versa. An example showing the agreement between observation and theory is discussed. Another example deals with the spectral dependence of diffuse reflection in case of symmetrical scattering (sea water of utmost clearness).
In deep ocean areas and in optically homogeneous water the same exponential law is approximately valid for the extinction of daylight as well as of an artificial light beam. — There is, however, a distinction between the two extinction coefficients because they are differently composed of absorption and scattering. The vertical extinction coefficient as determined by daylight measurements and the physical extinction coefficient resulting from transparency measurements in connection with the diffuse reflection of sea water as derived from simultaneous measurements of the downward and upward component may be used for computing the coefficients of absorption and of forward and backward scattering. Formulae and diagrams for the determination of these optical constants of the sea water are given and a laboratory experiment as well as a series of measurements from the western Baltic are discussed.
