Conclusions

  1. 1.

The role of the wind factor in the formation of ice pressure on structures depends on the relation between the wind speed and current velocity. Thus, for ratios (w/v)<10 characteristic for free rivers and relatively shallow impounded pools it is small and it can be neglected in engineering calculations; for large ratios (w/v)>100 characteristic for large reservoirs the wind has a decisive effect on the extent of the ice loads in the period of the spring ice run. In the intermediate range of w/v ratios the effect of the wind is commensurable with the effect of the stream.

  2. 2.

For small w/v ratios it is advisable to use equations of the type derived in [4] for calculating the ice loads, and for ratios (w/v)>10 for shallow pools and (w/v)<100 for deep pools, when not one of the main factors of the ambient medium of the ice can be neglected; in these equations is is necessary to replace M1=(v/C1im)2 by M2=(v/C1im)2A[1+ N(w/v)2]. When (w/v)>100 in the case of deep reservoirs it is advisable to use the reduced equations of the type derived in this article.
